The Indonesian Ministry of Education has called for all face-to-face teaching and learning activities at all levels of education to be replaced with online home learning methods to break the chain of COVID-19 spread. Of course, this is a new habit that requires adaptation for parents because they have to guide their children to study at home while they have daily routine activities to do. But don't worry, learning at home can also be done in a fun and effective way, here are the tips:

  1. Create a productive atmosphere

Educational psychologist and co-founder of Rumah Dandelion, Agstried Elisabeth says that the first task of parents is to help their children adapt to their new learning habits, because the atmosphere at school and at home must be different. Parents who have to work at home or Work From Home (WFH) can set an example to their children that work must still be completed. In addition, it would be better if children are given a special place to study to keep creating a productive atmosphere, avoiding locations close to the TV or lounge room.

2. Create a schedule

Make a list of activities that need to be completed from time to time. The to-do list can help children practice responsibility to see when they can fulfill their obligations and when they can enjoy their time at home. Once the to-do list is completed, reward them for their discipline, for example by giving them their favorite food.

3. Be a fun study buddy

Be a good study buddy for your child. Listen more and be more patient in dealing with children who have difficulty learning at home. It is undeniable that learning at home is boring, because children have to learn using online methods and away from their friends. Make more time at home a bonding moment or strengthen the bonding between parents and children.

4. Strengthen communication

Communication is important for parents and children to find the right solutions to various problems that may be faced while spending a lot of time at home. Invite children to share their complaints about learning at home, provide an explanation or understanding that this new habit is not easy to face by anyone but must be passed together and help children find the right alternatives to make learning at home more fun.
